I grew up in the small town of Greencastle, IN (pop. 8,000) where I graduated from high school. I attended DePauw University in Greencastle. After taking three years off to serve in the U.S. Army, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in mathematics. I attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Mathematics in May 1982.
I met my future wife Elizabeth while attending the University of Illinois. She was also a mathematics major, and she is currently a full professor in the mathematics department at Broome Community College.
I moved to the Southern Tier in 1982 for a job as a systems analyst with IBM Owego. My wife and I moved to our current residence at 1620 Butternut Dr., Vestal, NY in 1985.
I worked for IBM for 13 years. During that time period, I held several positions including systems analyst and team leader. After leaving IBM, I accumulated a variety of experience while holding jobs such as special event coordinator (for CHOW), quality manager, project manager, and adjunct instructor in mathematics at Broome Community College. I have been employed at HealthNow New York Inc. for six years and currently work as a statistics analyst.
I became involved in community activities in Vestal through the local Elks lodge when I coordinated a blood drive and volunteered at the annual Hoop Shoot contest. I have served as the president of the local Elks Lodge, State Chairman for Elks Major Projects, and as a board member of the New York State Elks Major Projects Board.
I joined Vestal Dollars for Scholars in 1991 and became president in 1995. I have been president for the last 12 years. While serving as president, the number of scholarships awarded each year grew from 42 in 1996 to 140 in 2005. This year we are awarding 127 scholarships worth $63,650.
My first involvement in politics was in 1988 when my wife ran for town council. She lost. We supported Anndrea Starzak during her campaigns for town council and supervisor. When Anndrea decided not to run for supervisor two years ago, she asked me to consider running. I decided this would be a good way for me to step up my service to the community. Even though I lost that election, I have maintained my interest in Vestal. I am running again because I think it is time for a change, time for fiscal restraint, time for better communications. |
